PSSE Schroth – Treatment of Scoliosis and Kyphosis

The PSSE Schroth Method for Treating Scoliosis and Kyphosis

The Schroth method is a specialized and non-surgical approach to treating scoliosis and kyphosis. It was developed by Katharina Schroth in Germany in the 1920s and has since evolved into one of the most recognized methods worldwide.

It aims to correct the curvature of the spine through three-dimensional exercises that include stretching, strengthening and breathing techniques.

Let's take a closer look at how this method works, who can benefit from it, and what a patient can expect from it.

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth method is a type of physiotherapy  that concentrates on correcting scoliosis through three-dimensional exercises.

These exercises are designed specifically for each patient, taking into account the unique curvature and condition of their spine. The key to this method is the use of breathing techniques, which help rotate and align the spine.

The main objectives of the Schroth method exercises include:

• Stabilization of the curves
• Improvement  of spine and chest mobility
• Pain reduction
• Improvement of breathing function
• Strengthening of the trunk and spine muscles

History and Development of the Schroth Method

Katharina Schroth, creator of the method, developed the technique based on her own personal experiences with scoliosis. She found that corrective breathing and strengthening exercises could improve the curvature of her spine. After years of experimentation and observing  the results in her patients, the method evolved into a full physical therapy programme. Katharina, together with her daughter Christa Schroth, founded a clinic in Germany, which became internationally recognized for the successful treatment of scoliosis.

When is the Schroth Method Applied?

The Schroth method can be applied to patients of all ages and at any stage of scoliosis or kyphosis. It is especially useful for developing teenagers as it can help in prevention and worsening of the curvature. In addition, it is suitable for adults who wish to manage pain and improve the function of their spine without surgical intervention. The method is also applied to patients who have already undergone surgery for scoliosis, helping in the maintenance of the surgery results  and avoid further complications.

How is the Schroth method applied?

The exercises of the Schroth method include three main elements:

1. Muscle Symmetry: Scoliosis affects muscle function on one side of the body, creating asymmetry.  The exercises of this method aim to restore symmetry through strengthening weak muscles and the lengthening of tight muscles
2. Rotational Breathing: The rotational breathing technique helps in  rotation of the spine and in formation  of the rib cage and surrounding soft tissues.  Patients are trained to breathe deeply and use their breath to expand compressed areas of their spine
3. Posture Awareness: Mirrors and other visual aids are used to monitor and correct posture, encouraging self-awareness and improving daily posture.

The advanced PSSE-Schroth method we apply exclusively at MTS Syros

The PSSE Schroth method (Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises) is a modern development of the classic Schroth method. While the traditional Schroth method focuses on the correction of scoliosis through three-dimensional exercises and breathing techniques, PSSE Schroth goes a step further by incorporating new scientific data and technologies.

Specifically, the differences are the following:

New Clinical Classification of Scoliosis: The new classification of scoliosis types is very accurate for all types of scoliosis, allowing maximum correction when it is  recommended for the type of scoliosis, with absolute safety and without the risk of worsening secondary scoliosis

New Techniques for Corrective Breathing and Muscle Activation: A new technique for rotational breathing on exhalation and different strategies for muscle activation.

Ease of training: Ease of training in the method for therapists and patients

Training for daily activities: Training for  everyday activities begin at the beginning of treatment

Advantages for double and balanced scoliosis: The new PSSE-Schroth classification allows more effective correction of double and balanced scoliosis compared to other methods for scoliosis

High quality training: The theoretical training is of very high quality regarding clinical assessment, prognosis, radiological measurements, treatment indications, etc.

Maximum correction of every curve: The method allows maximum correction of each type of scoliosis for which it is recommended whilst at the same time avoiding the creation of compensatory curves or worsening of them especially when we are talking about double curve scoliosis

Personalised Patients Assessment Card: The patient assessment card for kyphosis and scoliosis does not exist in any other treatment method

A wide variety of exercises: There is a wide and varied choice of exercises Using the PSSE Schroth method for kyphosis and scoliosis

What should the patient expect from the treatment?
Patients who are taking part in the Schroth method therapy programme can expect the following benefits:

Posture Improvement: The exercises of this method help in body posture improvement, correcting curvature of the spine.

Stability of the curvature: The method aims to improve stability of the curvature, preventing it from worsening.

Strengthening Stability and strength: The exercises strengthen core muscles and of the spine, improving the stability and endurance.

Easier Breathing: The use of breathing techniques improve lung function and aid breathing.

Pain Reduction: The exercises help in pain reduction which is related to scoliosis and kyphosis.

Improvement in Overall Patterns of Movement and Function: Patients report improvements in mobility and overall function of their spine.

Who needs the Schroth method

The Schroth method is suitable for persons with scoliosis or kyphosis of all ages. It is particularly beneficial for adolescents developing and going through growth spurts as it can aid prevention in the worsening of curvature. It is also ideal for adults who want help in pain management and wish to improve their spine function without surgical intervention.

What the Patient Needs to Know

Patients must be prepared for the intensity of treatment, which requires dedication and patience. The Schroth method requires continuous application of the exercises and breathing techniques at home, and patients are encouraged to stay in regular contact with their therapist for programme reassessments and adjustments. Regular monitoring and retraining are key to maintaining results and improvement in quality of life.

Modern Developments and Practices

The Schroth method continues to evolve over time. Modern developments include the incorporation of new technologies, such as the use of imaging techniques to better analyze and evaluate the curvature of the spine. In addition, therapists use adapted exercise programmes that take into account the needs and abilities of each individual patient. Research continues to support the method's effectiveness, making it one of the most scientifically proven approaches to treating scoliosis and kyphosis.

The Role of the Healer in the Schroth Method

The therapist plays a key role in the success of the Schroth method. Therapists at MTS Syros are trained to assess the condition of each patient's spine and to create individualized exercise programmes. During treatment, therapists guide patients in the correct execution of the exercises, monitoring their progress and making adjustments where necessary. Ongoing training and reassessment by the therapist is vital to maintaining treatment results.

The Benefits of Continual Treatment and Retraining

The Schroth method is not a once-and-done treatment. On the contrary it requires continuous commitment and retraining to maintain results. Patients are encouraged to perform the exercises at home daily and participate in regular sessions with their therapist.
Continued treatment helps prevent worsening of the curvature and maintain improvement in spinal posture and function.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Schroth Method

1. How often should I do the Schroth exercises?  Schroth exercises should be done daily for optimal results. Consistency is key to maintaining improvements.
2. How long will treatment take?  The duration of treatment varies according to the individual needs and condition of the patient.  Some patients may see significant improvement in a few months, while others may take longer.
3. Can the Schroth method replace surgery?  The Schroth method can help avoid surgery in many cases, especially if applied early and consistently. However, in severe cases, surgery may be necessary and the Schroth method may be used in conjunction with it for better results.

Why at MTS Syros?
At the physical therapy center of MTS Syros we have the official PSSE SCHROTH certification as well as the experience to guide you through safely and effectively in the management of scoliosis or kyphosis. As the method is also aimed at people of a  younger age, we take  the responsibility of our role very seriously and therefore have taken care to apply every step of the internationally recognized PSSE Schroth method with absolute precision.
